How do you imagine the world of architecture and its profession after the current viral crisis?
PAOLO POSARELLI:
This is the time of "patience and audacity/", as Alessandro Baricco wrote a few days ago in an article published in the Italian newspaper “Repubblica”.
Patience because today, more than in other circumstances, observation is necessary: we find ourselves involved in an immense laboratory, the world. The lockdown changed the organization and dynamics of the global socio-economic system in a few weeks. The world laboratory will provide us with interesting data in the future, especially from an ecological point of view: it tell us about a significant reduction in pollution, incredible images testify to the transformation of the waters of the canals of Venice.
We are realizing how the global slowdown, despite the numerous negative repercussions on human vital and organizational systems, has significant positive effects on the global ecosystem. In the utopian and at the same time tragic hypothesis that this momentary situation crystallizes (freezes as does the Cacapo mentioned in Prof. Alessandro Melis's TEDx Talk) it is perhaps interesting to understand how the system of man-made places will change and what will be the role of architecture in this process.
But before going into more or less shareable suggestions and vision and therefore moving on to "audacity" of a thought that has never been as necessary as in this moment, I would like to observe how in this war situation between two worlds, between nature and artifice, one of the two areas has not been slowed down, nor has it gone mad: nature taken away from anthropization has continued its course, careless of the self-flagellation that the human race has imposed on itself. An allopathic cure, that of self-isolation, to dispose of decades of toxins accumulated due to the irregularity and speed of one system that cared little for the other, a self-referencing system that has sanctioned the dominance of technology for over a century, a system which also produced wonderful things but which was more functional to development than progress (cf. P. Pasolini in Scritti Corsari).
Perhaps it is precisely in the audacity of thought, which is the last bulwark of the twentieth century, that we will find interesting stimuli for progress that will not and cannot do without Information Technology, or rather Artificial Intelligence, which has proved itself essential in this period in managing any type of moving situation with speed. The role of keeping us firm in our humanity belongs to the architect and architecture, despite all the intuitive process that still allows us, based on experience, to speed up a complex and unparalleled thought today.
Probably in the future we will have to deal with a domestic space more equipped for multifunctionality, a need that each of us is developing with smart working, and this will entail a readjustment of the city: most likely the areas of specialization will decrease with consequent recalibration of urban polarities.
In short, the social and organizational model will change, also necessarily affecting the "schedule of the times" to be dedicated to the various activities, a model which is already being implemented in some Silicon Valley companies: an apparent freedom of action but linked to the targets.
Domestic relocation will also affect the service sector, a process that's already underway, for example with regard to financial services and some healthcare services. Even the system of the production of tangible goods may endure modification have if one thinks of the network of 3D printers put in place to print some respirator valves, or the rapid conversion of some companies to make medical clothes; this lets us understand how focusing on the widespread capillarization of some production systems can create easily modifiable variable structures. The evolving economic forces will necessarily have an impact on the urban landscape in its relational sense: perhaps it will shift strategy to the logic of liquid rather than that of large granite blocks.
Perhaps we will go in the direction of systems which, organisationally, will try to simulate the system of nature and will have one characteristic above all: resilience, the bearer of that humanity which differentiates us from everything.

Come immagini il mondo dell’architettura e la sua professione dopo l’attuale crisi virale?

Questo è il tempo della “pazienza e dell’audacia”, come ha scritto Alessandro Baricco qualche giorno fa in un articolo pubblicato su Repubblica.
Pazienza perché oggi, più che in altre circostanze, è necessaria l’osservazione: ci troviamo coinvolti in un immenso laboratorio, il mondo. Il lockdown ha modificato in poche settimane l’organizzazione e le dinamiche del sistema socio-economico globale. Il laboratorio mondo ci fornirà in futuro dati interessanti soprattutto dal punto di vista ecologico: abbiamo letto di scenari surreali di città pensate per le persone in cui quelle stesse persone si trovano contingentate in spazi ristretti, ci hanno raccontato di un abbassamento significativo dell’inquinamento, immagini incredibili testimoniano la trasformazione delle acque dei canali di Venezia. Ci stiamo rendendo conto di come il rallentamento globale, nonostante le numerose ricadute negative sui sistemi vitali ed organizzativi dell’uomo, abbia invece effetti sensibilmente positivi sull’ecosistema globale.
Nell’ipotesi utopica e allo stesso tempo tragica che questa momentanea situazione si cristallizzi (si congeli come fa il Cacapo citato nella TEDx Talks del Prof. Alessandro Melis) è forse interessante capire come si modificherà il sistema dei luoghi antropizzati e quale sarà il ruolo dell’architettura in questo processo.
Prima però di addentrami in suggestioni e vision più o meno condivisibili e quindi passare all’audacia di un pensiero che, mai come in questo momento, è necessaria, osservo come in questa situazione di guerra tra due mondi, tra natura ed artificio, uno dei due ambiti non è stato rallentato né tantomeno è impazzito: la natura sottratta all’antropizzazione ha continuato il suo corso incurante dell’autoflagellazione che la razza umana si è imposta. Una cura allopatica, quella dell’autoisolamento, per smaltire decenni di tossine accumulate a causa della sregolatezza e della velocità di un sistema che poco si curava dell’altro, un sistema autoreferenziale che ha sancito per oltre un secolo il predominio della tecnica, un sistema che ha prodotto anche cose meravigliose ma che è stato più funzionale allo sviluppo che al progresso (cfr. P. Pasolini in Scritti Corsari).
All’Architetto e all’Architettura spetta il ruolo di mantenerci saldi nella nostra umanità, di mantenere nonostante tutto il processo intuitivo che ancora ci consente, sulla base dell’esperienza, di dare velocità a un pensiero complesso e ad oggi impareggiabile.
Probabilmente in futuro dovremo confrontarci con uno spazio domestico maggiormente attrezzato alla multifunzionalità, esigenza che ognuno di noi sta maturando con lo smart working, e questo comporterà un riadattamento della città: molto probabilmente diminuiranno le aree della specializzazione con conseguente ricalibratura delle polarità urbane.
Cambierà insomma il modello sociale e organizzativo, incidendo anche necessariamente sul “palinsesto dei tempi” da dedicare alle varie attività, si consoliderà di fatto un modello che già in alcune aziende della Silicon Valley si sta attuando: un’apparente libertà di azione ma legata agli obiettivi.
La delocalizzazione domestica inciderà anche sul settore dei servizi, processo già peraltro in corso ad esempio per quanto riguarda i servizi finanziari ed alcuni di tipo sanitario.
Anche il sistema della produzione di beni materiali potrà avere alcune modifiche, se si pensa alla rete delle stampanti 3D messa in atto per stampare alcune valvole dei respiratori, o alla veloce riconversione di alcune aziende per realizzare abiti sanitari; questo ci fa capire come puntare sulla capillarizzazione diffusa di alcuni sistemi produttivi possa creare assetti variabili facilmente modificabili.
Il gioco delle forze economiche in divenire avrà necessariamente una ricaduta sul paesaggio urbano nella sua accezione relazionale: forse passerà a logiche di strategicità liquida più che a logiche di grandi blocchi granitici.
Forse andremo nella direzione di sistemi che organizzativamente cercheranno di simulare il sistema della natura ed avranno una caratteristica su tutte: la resilienza, portatrice di quell’umanità che ci differenzia da tutto.
Forse è proprio nell’audacia del pensiero, che è l’ultimo baluardo del Novecento, che troveremo interessanti stimoli per un progresso che non dovrà e non potrà fare a meno dell’Information Tecnology, o meglio dell’Intelligenza Artificiale, dimostratasi in questo periodo essenziale nel gestire con velocità qualsiasi tipo di situazione in movimento.
